MitiaroMitiaro Island lies 229 kilometers northeast of Rarotonga. It is considered to be the friendliest island of all the Cook Islands. Perhaps it is because you are accommodated in homes belonging to local residents that induces friendships with the local population or because of the small close knit community. Whatever the reason you will find Mitiaro a very friendly island and will immediately begin to make new friends. The interior of the island is largely swampy and there is a brackish lake in the centre which are found the indigenous Mitiaro eel regarded as a great delicacy in the Cook Islands. There are a few patches of fertile soil in which the people grow bananas which form the principal source of carbohydrates in the Mitiaro diet.

The
island is only 11 miles in circumference which can casually
be walked in 3 hours. Be sure to pack sturdy walking shoes
as the makatea can be very rough. There are many caves to
explore on the island. Don't miss a visit to the Vai Naure
Cave with its fern grotto and fresh water pool. Swimming in
the cave is one of the favorite pastimes of the locals.It
is easy to make friends among the local fishermen and go out
with them in their outriggers. At low tide many people fish
from the edge of the reef with long bamboo poles.
